The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls’ basketball team went 2-1 in the Bronze Division of the 2014 Boo Williams Christmas Classic after having played games on Tuesday, Monday and Saturday in Hampton.

“I think it was good competition for us to play,” NSA coach Kim Aston said. “All the teams were really athletic and defensively put a lot of pressure on us, so it was good for us to see that before we start conference play.”

Lady Saints junior point guard Harper Birdsong, who averaged over 20 points per game during the Classic, drew special attention from most opposing defenses and was on the floor for every minute of every game.

“Harper played the whole tournament sick, so I felt like she really kind of fought the whole tournament to keep us above water,” Aston said.

Nansemond-Suffolk achieved wins over Green Run High School and Gar-Field Senior High School on Tuesday and Monday, respectively, while it fell to Bayside High School on Saturday.

The Lady Saints had to face Green Run without senior shooting guard Bridget Murphy, who had an allergic reaction that resulted in her going to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters to get treatment.

NSA sophomore Logan Harrell took Murphy’s usual spot in the starting lineup and “did a pretty nice job in her place,” Aston said.

Nansemond-Suffolk visits Norfolk Academy on Tuesday.
