A canine quasi-celebrity has been in town for the past few weeks for training at a Suffolk kennel.

Jack Mack, a bulldog owned by Ron and Amy Shirley, the stars of truTV’s show “Lizard Lick Towing,” has been at Imperial Kennels on Freeman Mill Road for basic obedience training.

“Bulldogs are hard to train,” Imperial Kennels owner Richard Patterson said. “In two weeks, we’re doing a lot.”

Patterson said Jack Mack is relatively friendly and has been a fine guest at the kennel.

“He doesn’t chase my chickens,” he said. “That’s a big thing for bulldogs.”

Patterson drove to Lizard Lick, N.C., where the towing business is based, to pick up Jack Mack on Nov. 18. The dog will go back home later this week.

The reality show on truTV follows the towing business and its employees as they do repossessions, which often turn ugly. Jack Mack is seen frequently on camera during scenes shot in the business’ office.

Jack Mack isn’t the only famous guest at Patterson’s business. He breeds Doberman pinschers and has had several champions over the years.

Patterson has been in the business for about 20 years, and Imperial Kennels has been his sole profession since he retired as a paramedic.

He said running the kennel, which is located on the property where he lives, has a lot of advantages besides just the short commute.

“Dogs are always happy to see you, and they’re loyal to you,” he said.

Patterson said he’s also been able to rescue, through proper training, a few dogs that otherwise would have been euthanized because of aggression.

“That’s always a good feeling that we gave the dogs a second shot,” he said.
