Suffolk City Council members will get an update on recycling programs and preparations for the city’s National Night Out festivities and will hold public hearings on two conditional use permit requests, during their Wednesday meeting.

The work session begins at 5 p.m. at City Council chambers, 441 Market St. The regular session follows at 7 p.m.

The work session will include an update on recycling programs, including the drop-off centers located throughout the city and the curbside recycling program. The TFC Recycling curbside program kicks off today, as people place their bins out on the same day their trash pick-up takes place. TFC also recently took over the drop-off locations in various spots throughout the city.

On the regular agenda, an update on preparations for National Night Out will be presented to council members. The annual crime-fighting event will be held Aug. 3 and will kick off at the new King’s Fork Public Safety Center at 5:30 p.m. that night. Dozens of communities throughout Suffolk will hold parades, cookouts and other events designed to get people outside and present a united front against crime.

Also, two public hearings will be held to receive public comment on two unrelated, after-the-fact conditional use permits. The first, if granted, would allow Blanchard’s Suffolk Tire & Auto to continue operating in the building at 321 W. Washington St., where it expanded its business some time ago without first obtaining a conditional use permit.

The other would allow First Baptist Christian School to continue holding classes at the Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church location at 3488 Godwin Blvd. In 2008, the school began holding classes at the church, but never obtained a conditional use permit to hold classroom instruction in the church building.
