After a rainy afternoon for the first day of the Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society’s Candlelight Tour, the society hopes today’s cold but clear weather will draw out more people.

With Sunday’s forecast calling for rain before noon but then gradually clearing and a high of 47, it should be a nice day to tour the six homes that are open for the tour in the Riverview area.

“It’s been real steady,” society volunteer Sue Woodward said on Saturday. “All the houses say it’s been very steady in spite of the rain, so we’ve had a nice crowd. We hope tomorrow’s weather will be better and more people will come.”

The 38th annual Candlelight Tour, the society’s major fundraiser, takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. today. Tickets are $25.

Open this year are the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Birdsong at 810 W. Riverview Drive; the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Woodward III at 824 W. Riverview Drive; the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clay White at 537 W. Riverview Drive; the home of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Haas at 807 Dumville Ave.; the home of Dr. Hannah and Mr. Jimmy Adams at 826 W. Riverview Drive; and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Johnson at 709 Jones St.

Plans include screenings of Christmas movies in the home theater of the Haas home, with popcorn and soda served. Guests can also purchase hot food and baked goods from Roy’s and Ricky’s right in Riverview.

The homes vary in age and style from a late 1920s English cottage-style home to a mid-century home with a large contemporary addition made in 2009. The tour includes a volunteer docent in each room explaining its features, furnishings and décor. Each home is beautifully decked out for Christmas.
