The Nansemond River High School girls’ basketball team will hold the Steve Artis Memorial Lady Warriors Jamboree on Saturday featuring brief scrimmages with eight different girls’ teams from around Virginia, starting at noon.

The teams participating include Chancellor High School (Fredericksburg), Green Run High School, Heritage High School (Newport News), John Marshall High School (Richmond), King’s Fork High School, Norfolk Christian School, Tallwood High School and the Lady Warriors.

Each team will play a total of three opponents and a total of six quarters on the day, two against each opponent.

The event, which serves as a fundraiser for Nansemond River’s girls’ basketball program, is being conducted in the memory of a longtime assistant coach, Steve Artis, who worked under Lady Warriors coach R. Calvin Mason Sr.

“He coached with me 16 years, and he passed almost three years ago now, so I’m just doing something to honor his memory,” Mason said. “He wasn’t an old man. He had a heart attack.”

Mason said Artis was an important part of the Nansemond River basketball program, assisting him on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. He helped students improve both their basketball and their academic skills.

“He did a lot of tutoring for us,” Mason said. “He was very committed to the program here.”

The memorial jamboree will include a 50/50 raffle and a full concession stand.

The price of admission for adults will be $6, and for children in grades 1-5 it will be $4. Youths 5 years old and under will get in for free.

“It’s going to be a great day of basketball,” Mason said.
