A Suffolk man pleaded guilty on Friday to murdering another man in June 2013.

Jeffrey O’Neil Jennings Jr., now 23, entered the pleas as part of a plea agreement. In return for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped the charge of first-degree murder to second-degree murder.

Jennings shot and killed 26-year-old Lloyd Randolph Green Sr. in the early morning hours of June 29, 2013, in the 1000 block of Cogic Square.

Prosecutor Will Jamerson said Friday that, had the case gone to trial, a witness would have testified to seeing the murder take place. Jamerson said there was an argument between the two men, but he could not say about what.

“There are some rumors on the streets, but I’m not going to speculate,” he said.

Green was pronounced dead on the scene by first responders answering calls that came in a little after 1 a.m. that morning. According to city statements at the time, there was a party at the location and Green had just arrived.

Following the murder, Jennings fled to Nashville, Tenn., where the U.S. Marshals caught up with him on Feb. 18.

According to a statement by the marshals, Jennings tracked Green down after the argument and shot him in the back of the head, then stood over the body and fired more shots at point-blank range.

In addition to second-degree murder, Jennings pleaded guilty to use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting in commission of a felony, shooting in a public place, malicious wounding, nonviolent felon possessing a gun within 10 years, and two counts of distribution of cocaine.

His sentencing is set for March 9.
