Elks offer space for yard sale

Need some gently used baby clothes, a nightstand or a retro-themed dining set?
The Elks Lodge of Suffolk might be of service.
For the second time this year, the lodge is holding a community yard sale at its property located on Constance Road.
“We tried one back in the spring, and we got a lot there, so we figured we’d do it again,” said Robert McDonnell, a member of the Elks Lodge.
For $15, any person, group or organization can rent space on the Elks Lodge field to sell whatever they are trying to get rid of.
“It’s open to the public, and anybody can come and we’ll provide them a table,” McDonnell said. “And then it’s open to anybody that would like to come and look around.”
In the spring, McDonnell said, there was plenty of shopping to be done, as each table had different things to sell.
“It was all kinds of garage-sale stuff,” McDonnell said. “It was sports equipment and furniture, clothing and jewelry. There was some glasswork. It was like a typical garage sale.”
McDonnell said a lodge member came up with the idea of having a large garage sale after he noticed how much space was available in the lot usually used for the annual Christmas tree sale. The club uses the rent money for sale space as a fundraiser to support the daily lodge operations, paying for its power, heat, utilities and so forth.
“It’s worked out pretty well,” McDonnell said. “And we’ll probably try it again. We’ll probably keep doing it is people show interest in it. It seems successful.”
The sale takes place at the Elks Lodge from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lodge members also will be selling breakfast sandwiches and refreshments this year.
McDonnell added that the lodge will be renting sale spaces up until that day, or until there is no more room available.
