Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Deshaun Wethington, junior for King’s Fork High School football: He was playing against one of the best teams in the state on Friday night and turned in a characteristically impressive performance on his birthday. He carried the ball 23 times for 139 yards and a touchdown, took a screen pass 79 yards for a score and had three kickoff returns for 62 yards, despite the loss to visiting Oscar Smith High School.
- Ja’Juan Walker, senior for Lakeland High School football: He was a bright spot for the Cavaliers on both sides of the ball, despite a 35-16 loss to host Western Branch High School on Friday night. He tied the game up in the second quarter when he took a screen pass 30 yards for a touchdown, and he helped keep his team in the game in the third quarter when he tackled the Bruins quarterback for a safety.
- DeShon Saunders, senior for Nansemond River High School football: He was a significant factor, offensively and defensively, in his team’s 21-17 win over visiting Hickory High School on Friday night. He went 4-for-8 passing for 100 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and got his wish to play defense, making an important impact as an outside linebacker.
