CHESAPEAKE – The Nansemond River Warriors football team continued to struggle as they went down to the Deep Creek Hornets on Friday night 25-0.

The Warriors’ red-zone struggles continued to plague them as they went 0-for-2 in red zone attempts on the night. Last week, the Warriors couldn’t score in four trips into the red zone

versus Western Branch in a one-point loss.

NR’s defense continued to take a stand though, allowing two touchdowns on the night, with Deep Creeks two other scores coming from Warrior turnovers.

Nansemond River started on a sour note, allowing a Deep Creek passing touchdown at the 5:20 mark in the first quarter.

Deep Creek scored early in the second quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass, but would fail on the ensuing two-point conversion try, leaving a 12-0 Hornet lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Nansemond River declines two illegal procedure penalties against Deep Creek, opting instead to have the Hornets kick again. This would work against the Warriors as Benjamin Dubois returned the ball to the NR 19.

The Warriors failed to get a first down on the ensuing drive. Brent McPherson’s punt would be blocked and the Hornets returned it for a touchdown to take a 19-0 lead.

Nansemond River would try to respond though. NR worked its way down the field, and a 21-yard catch by Bernard Jennings gave the Warriors the ball at the 25-yard line. Deep Creek forced NR into a 4th-and-3, which the Warriors couldn’t convert.

In the third quarter, one Warrior drive showed some promise after a 18-yard catch by Jennings over the middle, but the drive still ended in a punt.

NR’s offensive woes carried over into the fourth quarter, as they couldn’t move the ball past midfield until the last minutes of the game.

The Warriors would get all the way down to the Hornets 1-yard line, but couldn’t score on the last play of the game.

Nansemond River (0-5, 0-4) travels to take on Great Bridge next week.
