Car, truck and bike enthusiasts from far and wide will travel to Smithfield on Saturday for a show raising money for the Toys for Tots campaign.

Smithfield Ruritan Club’s 13th Annual Car, Truck and Bike Show will take place along Main Street from 9 a.m.

“We always do it in conjunction with Town and Country Days,” said Denise Galante, a past president of the Ruritan club and “the car show registration person.”

The show has had different beneficiaries through the years, she said. “Normally those suggestions come up through the ranks of our club,” she added.

“Somebody would have done some work with Toys for Tots, and it would have come up that way.”

Just how many vehicles come for the show, and how many folks come out to see them, is completely weather-dependent, according to Galante.

“If it’s good weather we’ll get 125 total entries, approximately,” she said. “Last year we had very bad weather and we got 12.

“The cars come from everywhere. We have had people from central and northern North Carolina. South Carolina even, (and) from the D.C. area. We have quite a few repeat people who come to this show.

“Then they come from Hampton Roads — Virginia Beach, west of us, Franklin. Everywhere.”

There’s always music, Galante said. Disc jockey Tom Norris, she said, would play “a repertoire of old music folks who bring these cars seem to enjoy.”

Town and Country Days, which celebrates the historic port town and the county’s rich agricultural heritage, will provide various other activities and type of entertainment, Galante noted.

Besides the car show, there’s Souper Saturday, the 2nd Annual Country-Que, the 12th Annual Smithfield Hog Jog 5K Run/Walk, Wild Hog and King’s Fun Run, Court Day presentation at the Olde Courthouse of 1750 and the Smithfield Farmers Market.

“We are just the sub-contractors that run the car show,” Galante said.

“Smithfield is an old, historic town. People come to see the historic buildings and antique shops, and they combine their visit with car show along with various other attractions.”

She also noted that the car show has a lot of trophies and awards. Specifically, 11 trophies, plus awards for the top 20 entrants.

The car show is a big event for the Ruritan club, Galante said. “It accounts for at least half of our charitable donations to the community,” she said. “It used to be a lot bigger back when we had big corporate sponsors. Now we rely on smaller donations from business to support the trophies.”

Registration is 9 a.m. to noon; the cost is $15 for bikes or $20 for cars. Judging takes place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with awards presented at 2 p.m.
