A man charged with breaking and entering had threatened occupants at the home of Leon Jerome Hayes and Naomi Nichelle Lambert, both of whom are accused in Monday’s shooting death of the owner of Carter’s Quality Furniture, according to a niece of Hayes.

Katron Shawndell Walker, 31, of the 2900 block of Carolina Road, was charged with entering a dwelling intending to commit a felony after police chased him around St. James Avenue and Wellons Street on Monday night, according to an arrest warrant.

After attempting to speak to him, an officer sent to the area in connection with a “wanted subject” observed a black male fitting Walker’s description enter a nearby residence before running into a wooded area and then the backyard of another house on St. James Avenue, the warrant states.

Police say they saw Walker remove his white T-shirt and pull on another shirt he picked up after forcing his way inside.

Brittany Davis, Hayes’ niece, said she was at the address of 33-year-old Hayes and 22-year-old Lambert, 406 St. James Ave., earlier on Monday when Walker arrived and made threats against those inside. The police were called, she said.

Citing an ongoing investigation, authorities have declined to reveal why Walker was a wanted subject.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink confirmed the residence Walker allegedly forced his way inside at about 11:56 pm. was in the 400 block. “No one was injured,” she added.

In Suffolk Police Department’s Monday daily bulletin, Leon Hayes, 70, is listed as the victim of a break and enter of a St. James Avenue residence just before 9 p.m. A brief description of the incident matches the incident described in the criminal complaint against Walker.

Klink did not respond to a request to explain the three-hour time difference between the bulletin and the warrant descriptions.

Whitepages.com lists Leon N. Hayes as associated with 406 St. James Ave., and Leon Jerome Haye’s mother, Deloris B. Hayes, 66, lives at the address.

Walker, who was denied bond in General District Court on Tuesday, is scheduled to appear again Nov. 3.

Prosecutors have charged both Hayes and Lambert with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and two counts each of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The pair were arrested late Monday night, less than 24 hours after the shooting death of Donald Carter, a longtime downtown merchant.
