Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Terrence Lambert, junior for Nansemond River High School football: He helped his team achieve a historic 21-19 win Friday over host Grassfield High School, which has traditionally made additions to the Warriors loss column. He carried the ball 14 times, gaining 100 yards, including a three-yard run for a touchdown that gave the Warriors an early lead.
- Jessie Lerner, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy field hockey: She produced six goals to help the Lady Saints go 2-1 this week and improve to 4-1-1 overall, already matching last year’s win total. In a 7-0 Thursday win against host Southampton High School, she registered four goals and an assist and contributed her last two goals in Friday’s 3-0 win over visiting Northampton High School.
- Jordan Stokley, senior for Lakeland High School football: He was the force that visiting Great Bridge High School could not keep contained on Friday, even after the Wildcats responded to the Cavaliers’ 20-0 lead with 27 straight points. His coach, Bryan Potts, estimated he ran for over 200 yards, and he scored on 80- and 22-yard runs, the latter being the game-winner.
- Deshaun Wethington, junior for King’s Fork High School football: He was the one who got the Bulldogs on the board after a slow start on Friday, and he scored the majority of his team’s points in a 34-0 win over host Woodrow Wilson High School. His touchdown runs came in the first, second and fourth quarters on runs of 17, 3 and 36 yards, respectively. He gained 153 yards on 19 carries.
