Nothing to do in Suffolk?

I’ve never bought the oft-heard complaint. Lots of groups work hard to provide fun, interesting events and activities for the people of Suffolk. We have a good perspective on it here at the newspaper, where we publicize almost all of them. Anyone who can’t find something fun to do simply isn’t looking very hard.

But to the extent anyone is still bored, the Suffolk News-Herald is about to bring some new entertainment options to town, starting next month with a Taste of Home Cooking School at the Hilton Garden Inn Riverfront.

Taste of Home, which publishes one of the country’s most popular cooking magazines and companion cookbooks, is bringing its touring Cooking School to town on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Area vendors will display their products and services from 4 p.m. until show time at 7 p.m., when celebrity chef Char Morse will demonstrate some easy-to-make seasonal recipes.

Seating is limited, so buy your tickets quickly at www.tinyurl.com/suffolktaste or by visiting our office at 130 S. Saratoga St. in downtown Suffolk. General admission tickets are $12 in advance. If any are left on the day of the show, we’ll sell them for $15 at the door.

A select number of VIP tickets are available for $35 apiece. VIP attendees will receive a complimentary Taste of Home Cookbook valued at $24.99 and meet Chef Char at a pre-show reception.

Musical entertainment will precede the show, and several nice door prizes will be given away. A few vendor booth spaces are still available by calling 539-3437.

In sizing up the possibility of bringing Taste of Home to Suffolk, I attended a show in Salisbury, N.C., a few months ago. Suffice it to say that attendees will be both educated and entertained by the experience.

The Hilton Garden Inn Riverfront is an outstanding venue for the show. General Manager Brian Williams and Courtney Thompson have been terrific partners during recent weeks of planning.

All we need now is for a few hundred friends to show up on Sept. 16 and help make it a success.
