Nelda C. Hayes, 88, passed away July 20, 2014. For 58 years, she was the loving wife of the late James E. “Tater” Hayes Jr. and was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Emma Councill. She is also predeceased by her siblings, Thomas Councill, Peter Councill, Julia Sledge, Willena White and Paige Perry.

Nelda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loyal member of West End Baptist Church. She started her banking career with National Bank of Suffolk in 1959 as a teller and worked through the many mergers with the company, finally retiring in 1988 when the bank was Sovran Bank.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Hayes and wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Michael Hayes and Meredith Hayes; and her great-grandchild, Laila Adger.

A graveside service will be Thursday, July 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, from 6 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to West End Baptist Church, 105 St. James Ave., Suffolk, VA 23434.
