Paul D. Camp Community College is opening the door for people who have the desire to teach and make extra income by working part time.
Interested prospects are encouraged to come out to the college’s Job Fair for Adjunct Teaching Faculty that will be held next week.
The positions at the college are flexible; some are during the day and some at night.
“It’s a friendly work environment,” says Jackie Spiker, the director of human resources at the college. “It’s a good chance to meet new people.”
Teachers have an opportunity to influence the lives of students and help them achieve their academic goals.
“It’s a very rewarding career.”
Informational meetings will be Wednesday, July 23 on the Franklin campus, 100 N. College Drive, and Thursday, July 24 on the Suffolk campus, 271 Kenyon Road. Each session is from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
During those meetings, administrators will be on site discussing the different requirements for the positions. Applicants are asked to come dressed for an interview and to bring their resume, unofficial copies of their undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and a completed Commonwealth of Virginia application. On-the-spot interviews will be conducted, and employment begins in August for the fall semester.
To be eligible to teach a transfer course, a master’s degree in that field is needed; to teach a career or occupational course, a bachelor’s or associate degree in that field is required.
Many of the openings are dual credit courses, which involves working at a high school to teach a college level course.
Fields in which positions are open include nursing, nurse aide, English, biology, mathematics, government, psychology, history and philosophy. The courses vary in hours and locations needed.
Already, Paul D. Camp Community College has 200 adjunct employees but is still in need of more help.
“Although PDCCC is looking to fill these adjunct positions, we particularly need nurses, not only to teach part-time, but also to run clinicals,” Spiker said.
“PDCCC has an excellent nursing program and has recently launched a practical nursing program on both the Hobbs Suffolk and the Franklin campuses.”
Spiker said the college also is looking for public speaking skills, teaching experience and a positive attitude.
