Farmers’ market comes to Carrollton

A new farmers’ market started up in Carrollton for the summer has easy access for folks in North Suffolk, according to its organizer.
Carrollton Farmers’ Market is on Route 17 in the Old National Bank parking lot, 13480 Carrollton Blvd.
It runs from 4 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday through the end of August.
“We have had a lot of Eagle Harbour folks come the market on Saturday in downtown Smithfield,” said Cheryl Ketcham of Smithfield Tourism.
“We wanted to give them another shopping option, especially during the summer when produce is in full swing.”
Another reason for starting the new market: Fresh produce doesn’t stay completely fresh all week long, Ketcham said, so folks can stock up mid-week.
“That’s why we decided to do just July and August, because that’s when produce is in full swing,” she said.
The market started Wednesday with 15 vendors, Ketcham said, and is probably going to grow to “closer to 20.”
Among the current offerings, Ketcham listed fresh fruit and vegetables — of course — a meat vendor with beef, chicken and bison; fresh-cut flower arrangements; wood-fired pizza cooked onsite; baked goods; and homemade cheeses and breads.
As for entertainment, Ketcham said they are looking into it.
“We are getting it all figured out,” she said. “We have had a lot of people ask for music, (but) we have very limited space.”
In fact, she said they’re calling it the “mini Smithfield market” — Smithfield Farmers’ Market, on Saturday, typically has about 45 vendors, she added.
“This is probably about half the size.”
Considering it was hot, windy and Fourth of July was two days away, Wednesday’s first event was a success, Ketcham said.
“We had a good steady crowd all night, and vendors were very pleased,” she said.
Ketcham pointed to the Carrollton location’s proximity to Harbour View and ease of access for workers traveling home from the shipyard or elsewhere on the Peninsula.
“It’s on the right side of the road when you’re coming from the shipyard,” she said. “You can just pull in really easily.”
