Delano Roosevelt Franklin Sr.

Delano Roosevelt “Hot Rod” Franklin Sr., 80, of 309 W. Fulcher St., Suffolk, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Franklin and Bessie Vick Franklin.

He attended Little Aide School and later East Suffolk High School. He retired from Planters Peanut Company and Oil Mill after 26 years. Delano was a member of Local 26. He was the organist for many churches, bands and clubs. He sung in the male chorus and was a member of New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church and the organist for 55 years. Delano was also the organist for Mt. Olive in Riverdale under the leadership of Elder A.D. Hall and in later years joined New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church under Bishop Paul Armstrong. He was a member of the Hollywood and Jericho Civic League.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Franklin; five daughters, Judy Franklin Mann (John), of Calif., Deborah Pugh, of Calif., Dorothy Brown, of Suffolk, Angela Johnson (James), of Portsmouth, and Jill Perry (Joseph), of North Carolina; two sons, Roosevelt Delano Franklin Jr. and Jonathan “Tim” Franklin, both of Suffolk; two sons-in-law; one brother-in-law; 21 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family and friends.

A homegoing service will be held at noon Monday, June 23, 2014, at New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church with Pastor Catherine Skinner, eulogist, and Suffragan Bishop Madison Copeland, presiding.
