The King’s Fork High School baseball team stayed true to its goal for the postseason — it did not go down without a fight.
The Bulldogs held the lead for part of Wednesday’s regional semifinal but ultimately fell 6-4 to host Grafton High School.
“It was a good, hard-fought game,” KF head coach Pat Stafford said.
He was proud of what his offense did against Grafton pitcher and University of Virginia commit Evan Sperling. The Bulldogs registered nine hits on the day.
Junior Duke Santora went 2-for-3, with two runs scored and two stolen bases, senior Tim Hairsine went 2-for-2, with a run scored and two stolen bases and junior Cal Bailey went 2-for-4, with a run scored and a run batted in.
“We just made a few more mistakes, and they ended up getting one more big hit than we did,” Stafford said.
Breaking a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning, Sperling hit a solo home run over center field.
For the first time, King’s Fork (14-9) finished the year with a winning record and made it to regionals.
