Nansemond River High School’s teams won 17 of the 34 events scored over the weekend between the boys’ and girls’ teams competing in the conference outdoor track and field championships.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors both won the Ironclad Conference championship as teams, and Lakeland High School, which played host, racked up wins in four events to give Suffolk a total of 21 first-place finishes.

Nansemond River coach Justin Byron was happy for both his girls’ and boys’ teams, but said he was a little more excited for the boys.

While the girls followed up their indoor conference championship win with a comfortable 69-point victory on Saturday, the boys’ avenged a narrow indoor loss to Phoebus High School with a 160-145 win over the Phantoms this time.

“Everybody stepped up and contributed,” Byron said.

While there were too many standouts to discuss all of them, the coach cited a few highlight performers in particular.

Junior Kadeem Middleton set personal records in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, winning the events with times of 22.41 and 48.76 seconds, respectively. They were both 4A state-qualifying times.

He was also part of the 4×400-meter relay team that won.

Senior Airrin Davis won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.74 and set a huge PR in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 49.89 seconds, a 4A state-qualifying mark that was good for second place. He was also part of the winning 4×800-meter relay team.

Byron said sophomore Terrence Lambert got hurt at the Penn Relays and sat out two weeks before he was worked slowly back into competition. Consequently, the coach was amazed at Lambert’s 4A South regional-qualifying time of 22.99 seconds in the 200, good for third place.

Lambert was also part of the winning 4×400 relay team.

Among the Lady Warriors, Byron said junior Candice James made herself sixth in the 4A state rankings for the 400-meter dash by running it in 58.01 seconds, earning second place. He noted it demonstrated her tremendous improvement.

Junior Zakiya Rashid won the shot put, the discus throw and was part of the winning 4×100-meter relay team. But Byron highlighted her second-place and 4A state-qualifying finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 15.47 seconds came after she had been struggling all year with the event.
