Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Lauren Maddrey, sophomore for Nansemond River High School softball: She improved to 15-1 on the season by going 2-0 last week. On Monday, she helped her team achieve a 6-5 win over its highly regarded host, First Colonial High School, giving up four earned runs and throwing four strikeouts. In Thursday’s 8-2 home win over rival King’s Fork High School, she gave up two runs, struck out five and went 3-for-3 at the plate.
  • Kristen Walden, senior for Lakeland High School tennis: She won several key matches this week in conference tournament play. Despite the Lady Cavaliers losing the conference team championship on Wednesday, she played well, winning her singles match, 6-2, 6-3, and her doubles match with senior Logan Reid, 6-4, 7-5. In the conference singles and doubles tournament, she advanced and won the singles championship, 7-6 (2), 6-3, and the doubles title with Reid, 6-1, 7-5.
  • Trey Wren, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy golf: He led his team to its second state championship in the last three years, producing the tournament’s top individual score on Monday — a two-over-par 73 — to be named the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II Player of the Year.
