Organizations are planning a number of ceremonies this weekend to mark Memorial Day.

The first event will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, when the United Daughters of the Confederacy will hold its annual observance.

“It’s certainly open to the public to join us,” said Rebecca Sharrett, president of the Suffolk chapter.

Sharrett said chapter historian Susan Carraway would speak on the Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War.

Following the UDC’s ceremony, the Tom Smith Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will have a flagpole dedication and will raise and lower flags on the pole, then offer them for sale.

Two different ceremonies will take place on Monday, with the first one beginning at 10 a.m. at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road. Organized by the American Legion Nansemond Post 88, it will include special speakers including Vice Mayor Charles Brown, Delegate Chris Jones and Rep. J. Randy Forbes.

It also will include the placing of wreaths and a roll call of veterans from every war since World War I, as well a “Taps” and other special music.

Beginning at 11 a.m., Cedar Hill Cemetery will host its second event of the weekend, organized by the American Legion Norman R. Mathews Post 57.

“We’re encouraging all veterans and families of veterans to come out and join us in the service,” said Joe Garlitz, post commander.

The ceremony will include a flag lowering, “Taps” and wreath presentations, as well as guest speaker U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Gusentine.

Forbes also will be the featured speaker at Franklin’s Memorial Day ceremony, sponsored by American Legion Post 73. It will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Poplar Springs Cemetery in the 800 block of North High Street. A reception will follow at the post’s hall at 935 Armory Drive.
