Clyde T. Green Jr., 85, a Richmond businessman, passed away on May 20, 2014.

He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 54 years, Nell Bradshaw Green; his sister, Bobbie Proffitt; and his parents, Virginia and Clyde T. Green Sr. He is survived by his local family and caregivers: sons, C. Thomas Green III and Michael L. Green; sister, Eleanor and her husband, Conley Poole; and business partner, Sue Stewart, also a caregiver. Other surviving family includes sister, Shirley Price, of Wilmington, N.C.; brother, Richard Green (Artie), of Cameron Park, Calif.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Clyde was a 32nd Degree Mason and joined Nansemond Lodge #77, AF&AM, in Suffolk, almost 60 years ago. He was a member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and joined ACCA Shrine in June of 1973.

The son of a masonry contractor in Suffolk, Clyde always wanted to go into the construction business. He was a “go-getter,” who showed drive and early leadership as president of the student body and quarterback of the football team at Suffolk High School. Clyde earned his degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute in 1951. Upon graduation, he was initiated into Kappa Alpha Order by the fraternity’s Beta Commission and inducted into the U.S. Army. As a Company Commander, Clyde served in Korea working in construction engineering, as he and his men repaired roads and bridges damaged in combat.

On returning from Korea, Clyde worked for the Department of Highways. In 1957, he joined Daniel Construction Company of Virginia, starting as a field engineer and retiring in 1992, as Vice President for Commercial Development USA for Fluor Daniel. Even after retirement, Clyde remained active, consulting and involved in real estate, as Chairman of Stewart Green Associates Inc.

During his career, Clyde completed executive programs at U.Va., Harvard and Stanford universities. He was a past President of the Richmond District AGC. He served on numerous committees and boards of directors, including VMI Alumni Association, Welborne United Methodist Church and the Pocahontas Parkway Association. Clyde was an avid tennis player, enjoyed some duck hunting, was a staunch fan of VMI and Redskins football and was a lifetime member of the Commonwealth Club.

After 40 years in the construction business, Clyde was involved in some capacity with contracts for projects all over the country, from bridges to chemical plants, manufacturing facilities to colleges. But, the ones closest to his heart were in Virginia, where he was most personally involved, including Norfolk’s “Scope,” Richmond’s Riverfront Plaza and Imperial Plaza, which led into the realm of property management, later becoming Daniel Realty. A builder and a consummate capitalist, Clyde T. Green Jr. was all about business. He will be missed and certainly not forgotten.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at River Road United Methodist Church, 8800 River Road, Henrico, VA 23229. Interment will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2014, in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VMI.
