Local residents can find out if their property is included in new flood insurance rate maps at an open house event tonight at King’s Fork Middle School, 350 Kings Fork Road.

From 5 to 8 p.m., representatives from the state and city as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which issues the maps, will be available to answer questions about the maps as well as flood risk and insurance questions.

The updated maps were issued in December and indicate flood-prone coastal areas in the city. Insurance companies use the maps to determine flood insurance rates, and some property owners may be required to purchase flood insurance if they live in a high-risk flood zone.
