Bulldogs defeat Titans

The boys’ soccer team at King’s Fork High School notched its second win of the season on Thursday while playing host to Lake Taylor High School. The 3-1 victory represents a real positive, but the Bulldogs’ head coach could not help but see significant areas that needed improvement.
“It was a win, but I think the boys, they played a little sloppy,” coach Michel Bilé said. “They didn’t play to their full potential.”
He said part of the issue was that they were not being challenged.
“They were in a hurry,” he said. Rather than get control of the ball and then move, they were trying to do both at the same time.
Nevertheless, they got the first point on the board when senior Oludare Olugbemi scored in the first half. The Titans tied things up, but then King’s Fork sophomore Drequan Wilson scored to make it 2-1 at halftime. Wilson also scored the final goal of the game in the second half.
Despite his issues with his team’s performance, Bilé did have praise for certain individual performances, including that of senior Corbin Morse.
“I think Corbin Morse, he had the first assist,” Bilé said. “That was a very unselfish play.”
Bilé cited junior Hugh Long and freshman Garrett Fuller together. He said, “Hugh and Garrett played very good defense to be able to hold the (Titans).”
Lastly, the coach highlighted freshman Sterling McGee for his ball control in the midfield.
“He gives, I’d say, more than a hundred percent every game,” Bilé said. “Very important.”
Evaluating the Bulldogs’ season thus far, Bilé underlined the fact that King’s Fork’s boys’ team not only has, essentially, a new team, with 12 new starters, but it also has a new coach.
He said he is “getting to know the players, but I think they’ll be ready for the rest of the conference play, starting in two weeks.”
King’s Fork (2-8-1, 1-1) does not return to action until May 6, playing at home against Phoebus High School.
“We have a big break, so we’re going to use that to make some practice corrections and adjustments,” Bilé said, in preparation for the important conference games.
