The Suffolk Christian Academy softball team ended a week of domination with a 26-6 blowout of host Williamsburg Christian Academy on Friday evening. The day before, the Lady Knights hosted Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School, defeating the Lady Crusaders 13-6.
SCA started the week with a 14-4 home win over Atlantic Shores Christian School.
Lady Knights head coach Robert Lester outlined the state of the team after Friday’s win.
“The girls continue to play great as a team; nobody feels like they’re above anybody else,” he said. “When it comes time to do substitutions, I didn’t hear any resistance about it.”
Sophomore Brianna Farrenkopf (2-0) pitched a complete game on Friday against the Lady Eagles, allowing four hits and six runs and throwing six strikeouts.
Suffolk Christian’s offense continued to be on fire. Lester said the previously bad weather forcing the girls indoors actually helped to this end, because after “being in the batting cages, everybody is on top of the ball.”
All but one of the Lady Knights has gotten a hit this season.
The leading offensive standouts on Friday included freshman Julia Powell, who went 3-for-3 with two walks and five runs scored. Freshman Grace Fowler went 2-for-2 with a walk, a run batted in and three runs scored.
Even when the substitutions started, Lester found other productive things for his players to do.
“Halfway through the game, I let some of the girls coach base,” he said, noting the goal to “keep trying to build their character and give them a little more leadership responsibilities.”
On Thursday against Bishop Sullivan, Lady Knights seventh-grader Penelope Franklin (2-0) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and six runs, but also throwing eight strikeouts.
On offense, SCA freshman Marlee Lynn went 3-for-4, with a double, a triple and three runs batted in. Fellow freshman Kaleigh McLeod had similar results, going 3-for-4, with a double and a triple.
The Lady Knights (4-0) play Monday at Peninsula Catholic High School.
