Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Sydney Wash, junior for King’s Fork High School softball: In only the second game of the season, she threw a no-hitter against visiting Indian River High School on Friday, leading to a 10-0 win. The day before, she threw nine strikeouts against host Deep Creek High School, helping to open the Lady Bulldogs’ season with an 8-2 victory.
- Gabe Everette, senior for Nansemond River High School soccer: He registered a hat trick in the first half of Friday’s 8-0 home win over Lakeland High School. Instead of going for a career scoring night, he focused on setting his teammates up for shots, garnering two assists. In Thursday’s 5-1 win against host Indian River High School, he had two goals and one assist.
- Cydney Nichols, freshman for King’s Fork High School soccer: She was an offensive powerhouse during Friday’s game against host Indian River High School, scoring five goals in a 6-1 victory. Though the Lady Bulldogs fell 5-1 two days earlier against visiting Great Bridge High School, she was still productive, putting in her team’s lone goal.
- Lauren Maddrey, sophomore for Nansemond River High School softball: In Friday’s 10-1 home win over Lakeland High School, she threw six strikeouts and went 2-for-3 at bat, with two runs batted in and two runs scored. In Thursday’s 4-1 road win over Indian River High School, she struck out nine. In Monday’s big 5-2 home win over Grassfield High School, she only gave up five hits and threw four strikeouts.
