A memorial will be held next weekend to remember the victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Set for April 6 at 2 p.m. at Constant’s Wharf, the memorial will be a short program that lasts no more than an hour, said organizer Isaac Baker.

“This is a way we can give back to the community and commemorate our ancestors,” Baker said. “It gets glossed over and passed around and not talked about.”

The event initially was set for March 25, the official International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, but was postponed due to wet weather.

“It’s not a money-making event; it’s a memorial celebration to remember our ancestors who came to Suffolk in the 1600s at Constant’s Wharf,” Baker said. “When it comes to black history, everybody just confines it to the month of February. Our history extends far beyond the month of February.”

The theme for this year’s day of remembrance is “Victory over Slavery: Haiti and Beyond.”
