Suffolk schools were closed Monday, and at noon Monday there was no plan for a delayed start Tuesday for city public schools, according to district spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy spokeswoman Tracie Thorndike advised all Monday evening activities for the private school were cancelled, and any delay for Tuesday would be emailed to NSA families and posted at www.nsaacademy.org as well as reported by news outlets.

Suffolk Christian Academy announced on its Facebook page it will be closed Monday.

Suffolk Transit will suspend service at 3:30 p.m.

Suffolk city offices were closing at 12:45 p.m., and the East Suffolk Recreation Center will close at 5 p.m. Suffolk Public Libraries also will close at 5 p.m. The courts also closed at 12:45.

Suffolk and the surrounding area are under a winter storm warning until Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is expected before 11 a.m., followed by sleet until 3 p.m. and then snow and sleet. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible, with the temperature falling to around 28 degrees by 1 p.m.

A city news release stated all bridges and overpasses had been treated with a brine solution Sunday, and the city anticipates having all primary roadways treated by 10 a.m. Monday. It’s unknown how effective the treatment will be, however, as too much rain Monday morning could wash away some or all of the material. Sufficient sand and salt also are available if needed, the news release said.
