One run is enough for Saints

Taylor Edens fired a four-hit shutout, and Nansemond-Suffolk’s baseball team needed every bit of his effort for a 1-0 conference win over visiting Norfolk Collegiate Wednesday afternoon.
While the win over the Oaks was the best game of the season for Edens, it was not a big departure from what he’s been giving the Saints throughout the season, said NSA head coach Mike Curry. In fact, Wednesday’s complete game wasn’t really a long outing for the right-handed junior.
“He’s actually pitched two eight-inning outings for us,” Curry said. “He’s had a couple outings where he’s been right around 100 pitches. I don’t think he was all that close to (100 pitches) today. He’s thrown a complete game every time except Monday versus Hampton Roads.”
Edens started Monday’s game against the Navigators, but with the Saints beating HRA by 13 runs after two innings, Curry pulled Edens in order to save him, as the Saints had four games in four days this week, ending Thursday at Greenbrier Christian.
The Saints (10-12, 4-4) got the only offense they needed with one swing of the bat.
With one out in the second inning, senior Harrison Spalding pulled a sharp drive that left the yard in a hurry, banging off the small scoreboard just beyond the rightfield fence of NSA’s park.
NSA cobbled together a couple other scoring chances against Oak pitcher Will Daniel but couldn’t get any insurance. Daniel also went the whole way, allowing five hits and striking out eight.
Meanwhile, Edens faced the minimum number of Oak hitters until two outs into the top of the fourth.
The Oaks had two good chances to score in the final three innings. In the fifth, a one-out single followed by Edens committing a throwing error going to second after fielding a slowly hit grounder put Oaks on second and third.
Edens got an easy grounder to Spalding at first, with the runners being unable to advance, then a strikeout, one of eight Edens recorded, to keep the 1-0 lead.
In the Oak seventh, a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position. Curry chose to intentionally walk the go-ahead run on base, and it worked. Edens got a lineout to Greg Beale in rightfield for the second out, with Beale taking a step or so too far in on the hard hit ball and having to make a leaping grab.
Edens still had enough zip on his fastball for a swinging strikeout on a full count to end it.
Spalding and Will Breedlove each went 2-for-3 at the plate. The homer is Spalding’s second of the season. Edens improves to a 4-3 record.
“The thing I’m most proud of is we got our butts handed to us yesterday and we forgot about it and played an excellent game today,” Curry said.
Bishop Sullivan beat NSA 17-6 Tuesday. The Saints turned around and gave the Oaks only their second Tidewater Conference loss. Next up, NSA plays at perennial conference power Greenbrier Christian Thursday afternoon.
