The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ and girls’ swim teams placed in the top four in fields of 21 teams competing at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state championships in Manassas this past weekend.
Hampton Roads Academy claimed both the boys’ and girls’ team championships. The NSA boys finished in third, just six points behind runner-up The Covenant School, while the NSA girls took fourth, one point out of third place.
“Overall, the swimmers had a fabulous meet,” Nansemond-Suffolk coach Karen Norman stated in an email.
According to Norman, NSA swimmers set 26 personal records at the meet, along with a couple of school records and season highs.
Emily Neuburg placed the highest out of any Nansemond-Suffolk swimmer, taking fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a personal best time of 1:00.55. She recorded a PR in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.07, good for 13th place.
Greg Beale, David Forman, John Wade and Ben Wilson set new school records with their times in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. They finished the 200 free in 1:32.36 and completed the 400 free in 3:23.15, dropping three seconds from their time in the preliminary round the day before. They placed ninth in both events.
Taylor Berard, Laura Wild, Madi Wilson and Neuburg formed the girls’ 200 and 400 free relay teams, which finished with season-best times of 1:47.05 (13th place) and 3:59.74 (12th place), respectively.
Ben Wilson established personal records in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. He finished with a time of 1:50.96 and came in 12th in the former and had a time of 1:03.98, coming in 20th in the latter.
Greg Beale also had personal bests in the 50-yard freestyle, 22.78 seconds, and the 100 free, 50.44 seconds. He placed 14th and 16th in the events, respectively.
