King’s Fork High School’s boys’ basketball team had gotten away from its prescribed game plan in recent contests, but it returned to form on Tuesday night against visiting Denbigh High School, resulting in a 65-53 win.

“We really tried to eliminate their main threat, which is an inside presence,” said Bulldogs head coach Josh Worrell, referring to Patriots junior Deshawn Johnson. “Our defense did a really good job of containing him and just denying him the basketball a lot in spots where he wanted the basketball.”

Johnson still ended up with 15 points, but about half of them came in the last few minutes of the game, when King’s Fork was up by 20.

“Dale Roscoe played really well defensively, containing the Johnson kid,” Worrell said.

In addition to three steals and three blocks, Roscoe, a junior, also contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, “so he really stepped it up,” Worrell said.

King’s Fork had a special night offensively.

“We made 11 three-pointers, and I think that was a school record, actually,” Worrell said.

Junior Tyese Pressley came off the bench and hit four shots from downtown, finishing with 15 points. Junior Justin Chicot also made four three-pointers, ending up with 14 points.

Worrell was pleased with the unselfish play his team demonstrated. He said in the first half his team made 10 baskets, with nine of them coming off assists.

Denbigh was making its second trip to Suffolk this week, having visited Lakeland High School on Monday. In that game, the Cavaliers closed the gap on the scoreboard by the fourth quarter but fell short 57-52, despite getting 23 points and 10 rebounds from senior Marche’ Everette.

Weather could interfere with the game, but King’s Fork (12-9, 5-4) was scheduled to host Lakeland High School (8-11, 2-5) tonight, with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
