TYNER, N.C. — Nina Pauline Jordan Byrum, 97, of 531 Happy Home Road, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, in her home.

Mrs. Byrum was born in Chowan County on Aug. 15, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Noah Edward and Mattie Ward Jordan. A 1935 graduate of Chowan High School, she was the class salutatorian, and later after marrying the late Jesse Leroy Byrum, she was a devoted and loving wife and mother. A faithful member of Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church, she served both in its Ladies Ministry and as a Sunday School teacher. Other enjoyments included her work as a 4-H leader with the community youth.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Knott; and by brothers, McIhrie, L.B., Forrest, and Rudolph Jordan.

Surviving are her daughters, Phyllis B. Moore and husband, Eugene, of Suffolk, and Pauline B. Winslow and husband, Larry, of Chesapeake; her sons, Jesse Leroy Byrum Jr. and wife, Merle, and Jerry M. Byrum Sr. and wife, Joyce, all of Tyner; two brothers, Graydon Jordan and wife, Evelyn, of Greenville, and Eugene Jordan and wife, Vivian, of Tyner; nine grandchildren, Catherine Mosley and husband J.J., Jackie Collins and husband Joey, Jesse L. Byrum III and wife Patricia, Deborah Brickhouse and husband Doug, Betty Rhodes and husband Robert, Larry Dean Winslow, Forrest Winslow and wife Kelly, Jerry Mack Byrum Jr. and wife DeAnna, and Preston Byrum and wife Sarah; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Revs. Tommy Oliver and Walter Byrum. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence.
