Cavaliers go high for CIAA crowns

High jump: St. Augustine’s junior Christopher Copeland (Lakeland) won the CIAA championship in the high jump in Petersburg Friday with a top mark of 2.16 meters (7-feet-1).

St. Paul’s sophomore Fred Boone (Lakeland) made it a perfect 4-for-4 in CIAA championships in his Tiger track career as he won the conference title in the pole vault at Virginia State on Friday.

Boone’s swept the indoor and outdoor vault titles for the last two years. He won the championship on Friday with a vault of 3.56 meters (11-feet-8.25).

Copeland finished sixth in the nation at the NCAA Div. II indoor championships in February. Copeland won the NCAA national championship at the 2010 NCAA Div. II indoor championships.

With five runs in the bottom of the eighth, Winston-Salem St. beat Chowan 7-6 in the final of the CIAA Softball Tournament in Petersburg on Saturday.

Chowan (34-19) advanced to the final with a 3-2, eight-inning win against Virginia State on Saturday morning.

Needing two wins over WSSU, as WSSU, the CIAA South Division champs, defeated the Lady Hawks, the CIAA North Division champs, earlier in the tourney, Chowan came close in regulation and in the extra inning.

CU led 2-1 until the Lady Rams scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. CU scored four runs in the top of the eighth, only for a huge Lady Ram comeback to win the final. WSSU got a two-run single with two outs in the eighth to get the tying and winning runs.

Senior outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) is a starter and earned first team All-CIAA honors this season and sophomore Shelby Pendleton (Lakeland) is a reserve outfielder for CU.
