A family of eight has been displaced from their home in the 1200 block of Lake Kennedy Drive after a fire late Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters found heavy fire and smoke at the home when they arrived at 5:12 p.m., five minutes after the fire was reported to 911 dispatchers.

There was an initial report that someone was still inside, but after firefighters conducted a search, they found all the occupants had escaped uninjured, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink in a press release.

The family includes four adults and four children, and the home has been declared a total loss. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross, Klink added.

The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
