It was a rain-soaked night of football at King’s Fork High School, but it did not deter the Bulldogs from making history. They defeated visiting Hickory High School 35-14 to go undefeated on their home field for the first time ever.

The decision was not made to go ahead and play until about 3 p.m., but King’s Fork head coach Joe Jones said none of his players were shying away from the opportunity to play in the rain.

“We got the guys ready, and I thought they played well,” he said. “They were excited, they wanted to play tonight.”

Sophomore feature back Deshaun Wethington let it show in the way he typically does — with large chunks of yardage. He scored the first touchdown of the game en route to a nine-carry, 128-yard night.

Jones said his team has been developing the passing game in practice, and while senior quarterback Uriah Adams only attempted one pass in the wet conditions, he made it count.

King’s Fork had been in the midst of self-sabotage with penalties pushing an otherwise successful drive back to the 50. Then, Adams connected with junior slotback TyQuan Weston for a 50-yard touchdown pass.

A 16-yard rushing touchdown by junior slotback Duke Santora and a three-yard scoring run by Weston gave the Bulldogs a 28-0 advantage at halftime.

Jones said he was not pleased with some of his team’s second half play. The offense fumbled the ball twice helping the Hawks to get on the board.

After their first score, however, Weston did his part to maintain King’s Fork’s hold on the game by returning the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown.

“He broke some tackles and spun and sputtered, and that was a heck of a run,” Jones said.

King’s Fork’s other fumble came in the fourth quarter, resulting in a second half in which Jones said the Bulldog defense saw quite a few snaps.

However, it generated some highlights of its own on the night, including a fumble recovery and junior defensive back Akil Freeman’s interception.

Santora ended up with four carries for 51 yards, and King’s Fork ran for 215 yards total on 33 attempts.

King’s Fork (7-2, 6-2) will close out the season next Friday on the road against Western Branch High School.
