The elderly driver in a fatal head-on crash that occurred on Route 58 westbound between Wilroy Road and Godwin Boulevard on Oct. 21 has died, according to city officials.
Everett Vincent Majette, 87, of Portsmouth died Saturday afternoon at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink stated in a press release. He had remained hospitalized since the accident. Though he had originally been listed in serious but stable condition, Majette had been upgraded to fair condition earlier in the week, Klink stated.
Majette was driving a 2008 Cadillac CTS the wrong way on Route 58 westbound at about 10:55 p.m. Oct. 21, when he ran head-on into a 2006 Nissan being driven by 23-year-old Keairra Diggs of Suffolk, according to earlier police reports. Diggs was pronounced dead at the scene, and Majette was flown to Norfolk General Hospital.
Several people had called emergency dispatchers in Suffolk and reported a wrong-way driver in the area, and officers attempted to locate the vehicle and close the roadway in the area where the incident had been reported, but they came upon the scene of the accident just a few minutes later.
