The man accused of attempting to steal a dog box from a retired police officer’s yard — and subsequently getting shot at — is in the police records again, this time for drug charges.

Quamaine Lamar Lassiter was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession of marijuana, obstruction of justice and manufacturing or possessing a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a July 19, 2010, incident in which Lassiter had contact with an officer in the 1000 block of Cogic Square.

According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, the officer detected “a heavy odor of marijuana on his person.” Lassiter allegedly ran after being told he would be searched for narcotics. George said Lassiter then threw a bag containing cocaine as he fled.

When he was taken into custody, Lassiter also was found to be in possession of a bag of marijuana, George said. When Lassiter arrived at Western Tidewater Regional Jail and searched, jail officials found more marijuana in his buttocks, George said. He was then also charged with possession of marijuana in a correctional facility.

The charges took nearly nine months to be brought because the drugs had to be sent to the lab for analysis.

Lassiter made headlines in January when retired police officer Charles A. Duck shot at an intruder in his front yard trying to steal his dog box. According to a report by Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Phillips Ferguson, Lassiter walked into Sentara Obici Hospital soon after the incident with a gunshot wound to the head. The bullet lodged under his skin and did not penetrate the skull.

Lassiter told police he was shot in the Lake Kennedy neighborhood and has repeatedly denied being at Duck’s house that night, according to Ferguson’s report.

Lassiter and another man, 19-year-old Lamar Elliott, also were arrested in February on charges of stealing $350,000 worth of steam turbine valves from a local business and pawning them at scrap metal businesses for a total of $133.

A trial is set for May 27 on the charges stemming from the alleged botched burglary.
