Davon Grayson did not waste any time in getting his college football highlight reel started.

Playing for the Division I-level East Carolina University Pirates on Saturday, the King’s Fork High School alum recorded three touchdown receptions in his first college game.

The Pirates won in a 52-38 shootout against visiting Old Dominion University, which was playing against a team from the highest Division I level, the Football Bowl Subdivision, for the first time in its history.

While the Monarchs were new to the level of play, they still proved formidable early on. The Pirates benefited from an amazing performance by junior quarterback Shane Carden, who threw for a school-record 447 yards and five touchdowns.

Carden had 46 completions on 54 pass attempts and did not throw any interceptions.

Pirates junior receiver Justin Hardy led his team with 16 catches for 191 yards, and two other receivers had catch totals of eight and seven, but Grayson still managed to stand out with his four receptions for 28 yards, because he led the team in touchdowns scored.

Grayson’s first touchdown came in the second quarter, when ODU held the lead 10-7. His 9-yard reception put the Pirates up, and when they fell behind again 17-14, he caught a six-yard pass right before halftime to restore the lead.

The Pirates led 42-31 in the fourth quarter when Grayson’s final score, a 1-yard catch, helped ECU pull away.

Grayson and East Carolina are back in action Thursday evening, hosting Florida Atlantic University.
