The Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia will raise funds for the unique service it provides youths, with a golf tournament and barbecue and oyster roast.

The group’s executive director, Dave Zobel, said 36 teams of four are expected for the golf tournament at Harbour View’s Riverfront Golf Club Sept. 16.

“Right now we have 21” teams registered, Zobel said Monday. “We have 15 to go.”

Entry costs $800 per team, which includes lunch, provided by Jimmy John’s, and dinner, provided by Roger Brown’s.

With registration at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m., entry also includes 18 holes of golf, driving range balls, live music, prize drawings, an awards ceremony during dinner, and $50 in Nike Bucks, which can be spent on Nike products at their merchandise tent on the day of the tournament.

Meanwhile, a barbecue and oyster roast will take place at the picturesque setting of Constant’s Wharf Oct. 5.

From 5 to 8 p.m., with tickets priced at $25, attendees will enjoy all-you-can-eat oysters and barbecue, as well as beverages.

Island Boy Band will provide entertainment on the portable stage, and the evening will include a presentation by kids from the group’s Suffolk unit.

Event sponsors are also sought, Zobel said. Packages for various budgets are available, from Copper Level ($250), with four tickets, a listing on the sponsor page and recognition in all print advertising, up to Platinum Level ($5,000), with 25 tickets, a full-page ad in the program, recognition in all print advertising and a corporate banner at the event.

Both events are in their fourth year in 2013, Zobel said. Events planned for Chesapeake include an Oct. 12 wine festival and Oct. 24 steak and burger dinner, while Eastern Shore Swine and Wine is scheduled for Nov. 16.

“The Suffolk unit is open every weekday Monday to Friday, from the time school lets out until 8 p.m.,” Zobel said of what the group provides locally. “Parents can come and pick up their kids any hour they want to.”

While at the club, which is held at John F. Kennedy Middle School, kids complete homework and, thanks to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, are provided dinner, Zobel said.

Kids also enjoy games and other activities, and a program running in Suffolk, Passport to Manhood, teaches boys how to transition into responsible and productive adulthood.

During summer, the club opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and kids get lunch and a snack.

The after-school program costs parents $15 per month. “You can’t find any other program at that cost,” Zobel said.
