Students have the opportunity to discover new career path at Booker T. Washington’s Career Week this week.

During the next four days, students will visit the gym during their resource times to meet people of various professions.

“It will show the students what they could possibly be when they leave school,” said school counselor Denise W. Singleton.

Booker T. Washington usually has one day set aside for career day, but Singleton said she wanted to extend it in her first year as school counselor.

“Instead of cramming it into one day, I decided to spread it out,” she said.

Today through Friday, the students can ask questions of representatives from Target, Western Tidewater Community Services Board, the Suffolk Police Department’s forensic team, the city of Suffolk’s utilities department, Wachovia Bank and many others.

Singleton said they are waiting to hear back from some professionals, and there might be more speakers added.

The event kicked off yesterday with the biggest day of Career Week, Singleton said.

Students visited the stations of an insurance worker who also does interior design and makes her own jewelry, a Newport News Waterworks representative, a canine ambassador of the American Kennel Club, Suffolk Fire and Rescue workers, and a worker for Virginia Beach Human Services.

Singleton said all the guests were a hit with the students, but the children especially enjoyed Lovey Lyons from the American Kennel Club, who brought a show dog with her.

Throughout the day, she demonstrated dog-grooming techniques to the students.

They also enjoyed meeting Singleton’s sister, Patricia Washington, because she had displays with jewelry she made. Singleton said the students liked the key chains Washington handed out as souvenirs.

Singleton said the day went great overall, and she thinks it was a success.

“The kids were really excited,” she said. “They learned a lot.”
