Clifton Purrington Sr., 91, of 317 Bullock St., Suffolk, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at his residence. He was a native of Jackson, N.C. and the son of the late Jules Purrington and Bessie Purrington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Otelia E. Purrington, and his son, Austin M. Purrington.
He attended school in Jackson, N.C. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Purrington worked at the Naval Amphibious Base for 36 years. He attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was a former president of the Winborne Mill Hunting Club.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Avis Kaye Purrington, of Glen Allen, and Mavis Faye Purrington Mitchell, of Emporia; three sons, Challis Llewellyn Purrington (Mary), of Fuquay Varina, N.C., Everett Glynn Purrington, of Ashburn, and Clifton Purrington Jr. (Angela), of Lawrenceville; sister, Roberta Anderson, of Queens, N.Y.; Presley Purrington, of Queens, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four nieces and seven nephews; and a host of friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, in the chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
