Trey Wren of Suffolk made his second trip to the VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship worthwhile last week by improving significantly over his first visit and being the only Suffolk golfer to make the cut.

The three-day event started with a field of 90 competitors and shrank to 45 in the final round, with Wren finishing tied for 26th. He had a 9-over 222 score via rounds of 77, 72 and 73 on the par 71 course at Hidden Valley Country Club in Salem.

“I was pretty happy to go up there and play well,” Wren said.

As indicated by the 77, the first day was rough, but the rising senior from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy recovered well.

“I was just swinging better, making better decisions and putted better the second and third day than I did the first day,” he said. “I just got the nerves out of the way a little bit.”

Each day got better for Wren, and the leaderboard illustrated it. Tied for 39th after the first day, he was tied for 30th the following day before ultimately advancing to 26th last Thursday.

Recalling the previous time he played in the Virginia State Golf Association event, Wren said, “I missed the cut by a lot.”

This time, he was one of only three golfers to make the cut from a group of 17 that qualified for the championship through a prior event at Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk.

Wren said he would carry confidence into upcoming tournaments after performing well against some of the best golfers in the state.

The VSGA event, being held for the 61st time, was exclusive to golfers ages 18 and under, and the winner was 15-year-old Logan Yates from Ruckersville, who shot a 7-under 206.
