Oh yes, it’s ’80s night

Break out your fingerless gloves, parachute pants and Members Only jackets — it’s almost time for ‘80s night in downtown Suffolk.
The free family event will take place Aug. 17 on North Main Street from Washington Street to Market Street.
“It will be very similar to the block party we did last year, but hopefully without the rain,” Tourism Development Manager Theresa Earles said. “We’re hoping to do this every year, but have a different theme each time.”
Entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. with music by E3 and Mr. DJ Entertainment.
“They are going to focus mainly on ‘80s music,” Earles said.
Traditional board games will be sponsored by Madigan’s Restaurant.
“You can go and play your favorite games of the ‘80s,” Earles said. “They may not have been created in the ‘80s, but that’s when a lot of us played them originally.”
Food will be available from Wrap and Roll as well as downtown eateries that line North Main Street and surrounding streets. A beverage garden will be held by Suffolk Festivals, and purchases will support Peanut Fest.
At 8:30 p.m., “Back to the Future” will be screened on a large screen.
“A lot of kids these days have not seen ‘Back to the Future,’ nor have they heard of it, because it’s a completely different generation,” Earles said.
Door prizes will be handed out throughout the evening, and visitors can bring their own chairs.
“We’re super excited, and I think it will be a great event for downtown,” Earles said.
