James Edward Bristow, 73, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Aug. 2, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was predeceased by his parents Thomas Newby Bristow and Addie Joyner Bristow; three brothers, Joseph, Samuel and Arthur; and four sisters, Claudette, Janie, Rachel and Eleanor.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Jernigan Bristow; daughter, Elizabeth Bristow Simpkins and husband Benny Simpkins Jr.; a granddaughter, Katelyn Elizabeth Simpkins; a grandson, Hunter Bodie Simpkins; and two sisters, Martha B. Koon and Louise B. Dowling.
Jim was a lifetime member of Suffolk Christian Church and member of the Baraca Sunday School class. After retiring from Performance Buick, he and Pat spent most of their time relaxing in their home at the Outer Banks. He was a friend to all who knew him and he enjoyed attending Nags Head Church and Monday morning Bible studies with Barbara Carpenter and his special friends in faith.
Jim found incredible courage and inspiration in his unwavering faith in God and His grace. His true love for God gave him the strength to face his challenges with that memorable smile and laugh that touched so many of our hearts. He lived his life centered around his family and took great pride and joy in participating in his grandchildren’s activities.
A funeral service is planned for Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Suffolk Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael D. Halley and Chaplain Richard Moon, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Suffolk Christian Church and its food pantry.
The family would like to thank the Sentara Hospice group that spent countless hours with the family. Special thanks to Melody McPherson, Erica Parrish, Tonya Crocker, Scott Abel, Sharon Gonn, Chaplain Moon, Reverend Halley, the Suffolk Christian Church Care and Concern committee, and special neighbors and friends of the family who were so willing to comfort us in our time of need.
