William Turner Winner

SUFFOLK — William T. Winner, aged 98 years, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013.  He was born on Feb. 18, 1915, in Perrysville (Pittsburgh), Pa., to Clarence and Edna Mae Winner. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the 45th Battalion Sea Bees and was stationed in both Alaska and Okinawa. Returning from the service, he was a well-regarded contractor in the Pittsburgh area where he worked in residential construction until his retirement. Along with his wife Mildred, he retired from the building trade to move to western Virginia where he pursued woodworking, gardening, and world travel.

Moving to the Tidewater area and eventually residing at Lake Prince Center, he continued to be active in woodworking and was a voracious reader and student of history.

Bill was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, serving on the session of Hiland Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. After moving to Suffolk, he and Mildred attended St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Janet Winner (Richard Boutwell), of Norfolk, and son Douglas S. Winner (Elaine), of Erie, Pa. Additionally, he is survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred, his sister Gladys Winner and his brother James Winner.

No calling hours will be observed and final interment will be in the family plot at Hiland Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh.
