Hobbs to hold book signing for ‘Siege of Suffolk’

Local author Kermit Hobbs will sign copies of his new book, “Siege of Suffolk,” this Sunday.
The book was produced in partnership with the Suffolk News-Herald, Suffolk Living and the Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society. It includes 16 stories on the siege by Hobbs that were published in the Suffolk News-Herald in April and May, as well as two never-before-seen stories that show what Suffolk was like before the war and after the Union occupation of the town, before the Confederate forces arrived.
Hobbs, who has long been interested in Suffolk history, said he got the idea to do the series of stories after conducting a Civil War battlefield tour the first week of April.
“The next morning I woke up and thought, ‘I’ll do something in recognition of it,’” he said.
He contacted News-Herald Editor Res Spears, and Hobbs and the paper partnered to present the story of the siege in serial form.
“It was real fun,” Hobbs said, adding that he has done so much research on the topic that he already knew most of what he wrote, or at least knew where to find it.
The brief stories for each event during the siege, as well as some features documenting everyday life during the siege, are accompanied by historical illustrations and photographs.
“It’s easy to write that way, and it’s also easy to read that way,” Hobbs said of the structure of the book.
Hobbs has co-authored two other books on Suffolk history. “Suffolk: A Pictorial History” and “Suffolk: A Celebration of History” were written with William Paquette.
The book signing on Sunday will take place beginning at 2 p.m. at the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum, 326 N. Main St.
The 40-page, full-color book is available at the book signing for $9.95, plus tax. It is available beginning this week at the train station or at the Suffolk News-Herald office, 130 S. Saratoga St. To place orders for mailed copies, call the Suffolk News-Herald at 539-3437. The total cost for mailed copies is $12.95, which includes tax and postal charges.
