Andrea to deliver rain, wind

Suffolk residents will be feeling the effects of Tropical Storm Andrea throughout the day Friday.
Andrea formed in the Gulf of Mexico late Wednesday and made landfall in Florida Thursday. It is expected to deliver mostly rain to Suffolk on its brush with the East Coast, said meteorologist James Foster with the National Weather Service’s Wakefield office. About two to four inches of rain is expected.
“I don’t think there’s going to be any significant problem with wind,” he said. “It looks like any tropical storm-force winds will be along the immediate coast.”
Winds in Suffolk could reach up to 30 miles per hour, he added.
A flood watch and tropical storm warning are in effect for Suffolk and surrounding areas.
Heavy rainfall is expected on Friday, with small creeks and streams at risk for overflowing. Motorists should never drive into flood waters.
The threat for isolated tornados also exists throughout the day Friday, according to the tropical storm warning.
By late Friday, “the storm should be north of us and moving pretty rapidly to the north,” Foster said.
Even so, the National Weather Service still expects showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, with a high near 86.
Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said the school division has not yet made a decision on whether to move Saturday’s three graduations inside the gymnasiums or keep them in the football stadiums. The division initially planned to make announcements two hours prior to each ceremony but could move that up based on the effects of the storm.
