Samuel Almond

Samuel Almond, 81, of 225 N. Division St., Suffolk, died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at his residence. He was a native of Marlboro County, S.C., and the son of the late Tilor Almond and Marie Cook Almond. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine E. Almond.

He was a graduate of East Suffolk High School and received an A.A.S. degree from Paul D. Camp Community College. He retired as a legal clerk at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War era and received the Purple Heart. Samuel was a member of St. Timothy Baptist Church, where he was a trustee, former church financial secretary, and was the coordinator of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. He was a Disabled American Veteran, lifetime member of the NAACP, notary public and voter registration official.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Jacqueline Hicks, of Suffolk; five grandchildren, Kimberly Vann Haynes (Eric), of Portsmouth, Laron Vann (Lugonda), of Portsmouth, Andrae D. Hicks II, Daisha A. Wiggins (Jovan) and Jada A. Hicks, all of Suffolk; eight great-grandchildren, Destiny, Eric Jr., Erica, KaRon, Sariyah, Alivia, Jovan and Jerimiah; four sisters, Marjorie A. Allmond, of Cambria Heights, N.Y., Alice A. Manley, of Suffolk, Sandra Almond-Cooper (James), of Baltimore, Md., and Shirley Branch, of Suffolk; special brother/caregiver, Morris “Randy” Carr, of Suffolk; special devoted friends, Velma Brownson, Mamie Sutton, Sherman and Carol Goodman, William Goodman and Sam and Lisa Copeland; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, June 7, 2013, at St. Timothy Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Thomas E. Harden. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to DAV Chapter 5, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia or a charitable organization of your choice in Samuel’s memory.
