A fire on Pelican Crescent on Monday morning apparently started when embers from a fire pit used Sunday were deposited in a trash can next to the house, a city spokeswoman said.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to the house off Respass Beach Road in North Suffolk just after 10 a.m. Monday. Two engines responded to the fire, which was quickly brought under control, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

No injuries were reported from the fire. A hamster was rescued from the blaze, George said.

In a separate fire Saturday on East Washington Street downtown, the fire marshal still is investigating the cause of the blaze. One resident jumped to safety from a second-floor window, while two others also escaped. No information was available on the man who jumped, who had suffered burns before he got out. A dog perished in that fire, George said.
