Nansemond River High School junior Trevor Riggs was named to the 2013 All-Southeastern District first team for baseball while his teammates and players from King’s Fork High School accounted for several second-team spots and honorable mentions.

Warriors head coach Mark Stuffel had been expecting Riggs to make a significant impact on the team with his bat.

“Seeing him in the fall, yeah, that’s what we expected from him in the spring,” he said. “I expected him to be a big part of our offense; he ended up being a huge part of the offense.”

Stuffel explained that as the coaches from around the district cast their all-district votes, they typically base their decisions on the offensive numbers, especially when it comes to opposing players they are less familiar with.

“All-district is about the stats,” Stuffel said. “The defense is important, but when you only see a kid two times a year from another team, the stats are what stick out. So, the kids who have the great stats are the ones who usually make the team.”

Riggs led Nansemond River with a .437 batting average and 20 runs scored, while tying for the team lead in home runs, with two, and runs batted in, with 18.

It all added up to what Riggs had hoped to achieve.

“That’s what I was pushing for, for the whole season — get first team,” he said.

As competitive as the Southeastern District is, he was particularly pleased with receiving the honor before his final high school season.

“It’s pretty big with me being a junior,” he said. “It really feels good.”

Sophomore Kieton Rivers was also an offensive force for the Warriors and earned a spot on the second team corresponding to his defensive position, shortstop. Also making the second team was sophomore Robert Fitzwater as a utility player and King’s Fork High School senior Noah Johnson as an outfielder.

Receiving honorable mention were Bulldogs seniors Danny Gromkoski (utility) and Marcus Welch (pitcher) and Warriors senior pitchers Matt Boone and Zach Rice.
